Although this house is the perfect place to just retreat, relax and rest - there is also a multitude of activities located nearby. 

Local Mountain Bike Tracks

MOONLIGHT TRACK

Location: 10km northeast of Blackball.

Duration: 13km return, four to six hours.

Skill level: Grade five (expert).

Ride along a historic miner’s path.

THE CROESUS TRACK

Location: Blackball, 25km northeast of Greymouth.

Duration: 33km return (20km return from Smoke-ho car park), one day.

Skill level: Grade four (advanced).

A premier West Coast mountain bike ride with superb views through forest to the alpine zone. Heli-biking options available.

NAPOLEAN HILL

Location: 47km northeast of Greymouth.

Duration: 12km, two to four hours.

Skill level: Grade three (moderate).

Adventure ride on 4WD tracks past an old gold mining settlement.

Paparoa Track

Situated just 10 minutes from Black Ball "Westie" is a perfect base before going to the Paparoa Track. 

Paparoa Track crosses the Paparoa Range. It takes you through alpine tops, limestone karst landscapes and thriving rainforests, and provides breath-taking views.

Highlights include:

 - Explore the spectaculare Pororari River Gorge with dramatic limestone cliffs, beech forest and glades of subtroprical nikau palms.

 - Sit back and enjoy incredible sunsets over

      • Enjoy the stunning views. You’ll spot the Lone Hand rock formation on the way to Pororari Hut.

Brunner Historic Mine

Just minutes from our Westie you will find the historic Brunner Mine site. 

This was one of the country's earliest industrial sites where coal was mined and coke, firebricks and other products were manufactured from the 1860s until the 1940s. The area is well interpreted with a short walk around the historic coke ovens, brick factory and the remains of tunnel entrances.

Plus so many more things to do!

Taylorville is a great place to access many of the regions wonderful activities. Greymouth has a history jade hunting, gold-mining and saw milling. Greymouth is also the arrival point for the TranzAlpine Train. 

Fishing: There are options for fly fishing in the Grey River (license required), or cast surfing from the nearby beach.

Shantytown: A replica township situated on the site of the gold-rush and saw milling history. Located between Greymouth and Hokitika Shantytown is a great family activity. Find out more here

Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and Blowholes: 

Explore a limestone landscape of pancake-shaped rock formations, blowholes and surge pools on this short, paved walk that's great for children. This is located at Dolomite Point, near the little settlement of Punakaiki on SH6. Its 44 km north of Greymouth along the beautiful scenic coastal road. Find out more here

Monteiths Brewery: Is a bit of a local legend! One of the oldest breweries, recognised as the original home of craft brewing in New Zealand, it runs regular tours as well as tastings. Located in Greymouth township. Read more here

Shopping: You will find a multitude of hand crafted Jade and pounamu jewellers in the township, as well as all the day to day items you may need. There is also a Sunday market held 10am to 2pm in the township.

There are many things to do nearby, or in a short drive so take the time to explore.
